World Trade Organization findings favor Panama
The controversy between Colombia and Panama is resolved at last
PANAMA. A shot in the arm for Panama comes with the World Trade Organization conclusion that the customs measures imposed on Panamanian products by Colombia were incompatible with the rules of the Customs Valorization Agreement of the international organization.
Colombia has been imposing higher prices on Panamanian products as well as putting restrictions at its ports as a way to curb contraband from the Colon Free Zone. After three audiences, the special group formed by Gary Horlick from the United States, Gonzalo Biggs from Chile and Miguel Rodriguez Mendoza from Venezuela, accepted the allegations presented by Panama that Colombia has violated its rights. The WTO ordered Colombia to eliminate the measures and comply with the obligations stipulated in the agreement. The Minister of Commerce, Gisela Porras said that she was very happy with the outcome, because the exports from Panama to Colombia and the rest of South America were suffering badly. During the process Panama presented more than 80 pieces of evidence to support its allegations and has requested that the verdict will be adopted and complied with by Colombia, as soon as possible.
