FTA with Canada could be signed in a few weeks

Panama will increase commercial exchanges in the region

PANAMA. The Martinelli administration is trying to get as many export commercial agreements with different countries in the region as a way to improve the Panamanian economy, says the vice-minister of Commerce, Ricardo Quijano.

“Currently we are discussing the final detail of the Free Trade Agreement FTA with Canada and it is expected that will be ready for signature over the next few weeks,” said the vice-minister.

On the Free Trade Agreement with the United States, Quijano said that due to the way the American Congress operates the document is on stand by.

“We are waiting for the FTA to be put forward again in Congress, to see if we can get it ratified, because it is of great importance for the United States and Panama,” said Quijano.

“Trying to get the ratification of FTA by Congress is going to be difficult. We missed a great opportunity in the past, when the Torrijos administration appointed Pedro Miguel Gonzalez as the president of the National Assembly, although he has an outstanding warrant against him in the United States,

“We will do everything in our power to make it a reality.”
