According to the web site www.mlb.com, the team became interested in Mendoza when it saw him playing during the winter season in Venezuela, when he accumulated an E.R.A of 1.62 in 21 games and only three bases per ball in 33 and 1/3 innings

That performance bought Mendoza his ticket to the Major Leagues after almost four years away.

The last time he played in the United States he was with the New York Yankees where He forged a glittering career with a life time ERA of 4.30 per life.

Mendoza is among one of the most successful Panamanian players and has won five World Series, four of them with the Yankees (1996-2002) and the last one with the Boston Red Sox in 2004.

After recovering from shoulder surgery during the 2005 of season, Mendoza returned to the Yankees.,

He is scheduled to play for Panama in the 2009 World Baseball Classic
