Last Monday, Balbina Herrera, candidate of the Revolutionary Democratic Party PRD received a cut on her lip, after a man threw a can of beer at her during the carnival festivities in Penonome, Cocle province.
Herrera identified her assailant and went to talk to him and told him that she will be the next President of Panama and violence did not solve anything. The PRD candidate decided not to press charges against the man and did not say if he was from an opposition party.
Herrera was taken to the San Fernando Clinic, in Panama city, for an examination by a plastic surgeon, who repaired the injury with 25 stitches.
It is not clear if she will continue with the activities she had programmed for the rest of the carnival. All three candidates are using the festivities to campaign in a concerted effort to gain adherents before the May 3 elections.
