The echoes of the public praise for President Marintelli’s handling of the Figali fiasco were still echoing around the country when newly appointed Minister of Government and Justice, Jose Raul Mulino made some truly “off the cuff comments” that have raised the ire of lawyers, human rights activists and others.

The president had displayed a no-nonsense approach to The Figali Group, which owes the government some $16 million dollars, and tore down fences surrounding acres of new landfill, and temporarily nationalized the land. “Hallelulljah” cried the populace, and hoped that the judiciary who in the past have ruled in favor of Figali, was listening.

Then came Mulrino’s visit to the hell hole known as La Joya. He rightly condemned the conditions at the prison and said:”people here are human beings, regardless of their criminal activities.”Somehow that doesn’t jibe with directions to “shoot anyone trying to escape.”

Perhaps the president could put the zipper on the mouths of cabinet ministers until they settle into office.
