SANTO DOMINGO. The sexual abuse rate of children in Panama and the Dominican Republic continues to rise “silently”, the United Nation’s Children’s Fund (UNICEF) said Monday.

“It is a top priority that children and adolescents are guaranteed protection against abuse and exploitation,” Dominican Republic UNICEF representative Francoise Gruloos-Ackermans said.

“We must all work united together to end the social tolerance of this crime, as it is becoming so common it almost seems normal.”

Gruloos-Ackermans offered her thoughts in a presentation in Santo Domingo. The presentation was entitled “The sexual commerce of minors in Central America and the Dominican Republic.”
