Pope Francis asks not to 'stigmatize' migrants

In the third day of the World Youth Day, the Via Crucis took place, in which young people, representing different countries narrated their perspective vision of the social evils that affects their respective nations

The Supreme Pontiff prayed to God and at the same time asked Catholics and the world population not to “stigmatize or condemn” migrants who are obliged to abandon their countries, roots, families and leave everything behind.

He made a parallel of the Virgin Mary’s sacrifice who was able to say yes and then remained firmly at the foot of the cross, during the moment of suffering that her son Jesus lived in the crucifixion.

The Pope observed with great attention each one of the fourteen stations that simulated the Via Crucis lived by Jesus Christ.

A few minutes before the conclusion of the Via Crucis, young people carrying a cross asked the Holy Father to intercede for them, so they can become a true “option of life” before the difficult situation that is experienced in the world today.

This was one of the few occasions, in which the Holy Father followed the protocol and stood up to read the message that a few minutes earlier had been given to the media. Francis said to the young people that he wants a Church who knows how to keep standing and create a culture that can shelter, protect, promote and integrate all her children.

Referring to the Virgin Mary, Francis said that that we must learn to "receive and shelter" all those who have suffered  abandonment that has forced them to leave or lose their land, their roots, their families and jobs.

Francis requested that "migrants should not be stigmatized and less generalized in the most absurd and irresponsible manner as carriers of social evil.”

We should learn from the Virgin Mary who was standing by the cross, “not with an armored and closed heart."

Francis message it was not limited to the young people and migrant, but he also refered to the indigenous people, who although they protect the ecosystem, they are stripped of their land, roots and culture.

He also talked about the old people and asked for them to be respected and valued. He remembered that they are the ones who never cease to “support and accompany their children and grandchildren.”
