PANAMA. The former President of the Republic, Guillermo Endara Galimany, is in a critical state at the San Fernando Hospital.

Endara, who was a candidate for the presidency in last month’s 2009 elections, was admitted to the hospital Saturday night suffering from stomach pains.

When the politician arrived at the hospital accompanied by his wife, Ana Mae Diaz, his blood pressure was low and his health began to deteriorate. Doctors operated in the early hours of Sunday morning to fit him with a pacemaker.

Endara’s heart problems, together with his diabetes, have complicated his condition and he is currently listed as critical in the Intensive Care Unit.

His sister in law, Yesimaid Diaz, said that the former president is doing poorly and next few hours could determine is he will live or die. She asked the Panamanian people to pray for him.

Guillermo Endara Galimany was the first elected president after Manuel Antonio Noriega was ousted from power in 1989.
