PANAMA. Only 20 bottles of the medication that may have been poisoned with diethylene-glycol can be tested each day by the Medical Legal Institute (IML), said Attorney General, Ana Mathilde Gomez, in a TV interview. Tests have been going on since the 8,000 samples were collected following 135 deaths by diethylene-glycol poisoning and a public health alert in 2006. To date, 1,500 samples have tested positive for the chemical.
It is not known when the Attorney General first became aware that the scope of her investigations into the poisonings needed to be widened.
The case was recently sent back by the Supreme Court following protests by victims and families who allege that many more people had been affected than was originally thought.
