PANAMA. The bill that protects the Coiba National Park has finally been approved by the National Assembly.
The previous law that protected the park was canceled on August 6, 2008 when President Martin Torrijos sanctioned a statute that eliminated the exclusion zone around the island, allowing tuna fishing using nets to operate in those waters.
Since then, environmentalist groups, small fishermen and maritime lawyers pressured the government to have the law changed.
Gabriela Etchelecu, director of the MarViva foundation said that the president should ratify the new legislation to protect the marine park.
Coiba National Park is home to many species in danger of extinction.
