PANAMA. The government owes the DIMAUD (in charge of Panama City’s garbage collection) more than $28 million, which might soon start impairing its duties.
The government debt has been building for 10 years, affecting DIMAUD’s ability to pay suppliers and banks. Ivan Arrocha, Panama City’s acting mayor, said that the institution is three month behind in bank payments.
It seems the service is not self-financed, according to DIMAUD director Rafael Reyes, as monthly expenses are $3,5 million while monthly revenues are less than $2 million.
The government has only recognized $17 million in debts, for collecting hospital wastes and sweeping streets. It has yet to recognize the $11 million owed for garbage collection services in Curundu and El Chorrillo.
