PANAMA. The maintenance problems at the Coastal Strip are already becoming apparent. The newly inaugurated park has been open for eight days and the place is full of discarded plastic bags, cans and food wraps. When the project was under construction it was never established, who was responsible for cleaning and maintaining the park, the central government or the Panama municipality.
It is expected that matters will worsen as the Costal Strip is fast becoming popular among Panamanians.
Although there are garbage cans around the park, there are not enough and many users prefer to deposit their rubbish on the green areas and sidewalks. Dog owners allow their pets to foul and do not clean up after them.
The former mayor of Panama, Juan Carlos Navarro said last month that the capital district office did not have enough money to be able to pay for the upkeep of the park.
