PANAMA. The former administrator of the Parque Omar, Mingthoy Giro, is facing charges of culpable embezzlement and negligence in connection with the disappearence of 42 bronze statues from a park storage area two years ago.

She has been forbidden to leave the country and has to present herself periodically to the Anticorruption authorities.

Giro said that when the statues disappeared they were not her responsibility.

“I am not a watchman,” she said.

Attorney Ramses Barrera said that the report from the Comptroller said that due care had not been taken of the state’s property.

The statues valued at $1.5 million and weighing 35 tons were stolen from a storage area in the park in August 2006. Despite the offer of a reward, they have still not been traced. Domingo Varela from the National Institute of Culture will be next to answer questions about the same charges.
