WASHINGTON. The Americans hung Panama’s flag upside down by mistake during a recent meeting between president Ricardo Martinelli and the US Secretary of State, Hilary Clinton. Just to remind you, for your next diplomatic occasion, when you hang the Panamanian flag the white rectangle with the blue star has to be closest to the top of the flag pole.

VERAGUAS. The last election to be held in the country, to choose the representative of Isla Gobernadora in Veraguas, was won by the opposition Partido Revolutionario Democratico (PRD) candidate who received 143 votes. His closest rival, Fidel Alfonso from the Partido Panameñista party, won 136 votes. The election had to be reheld on Sunday after the contestants tied in the first vote on May 3 this year.

PANAMA. Concessionists in Amador, who were recently threatened with eviction if they didn’t get up to date on payments owing to the government, have paid $2 million to the state coffers. The Ministry of Economy and Finance said that 10 companies have paid 30 percent of what they owe. If all the back payments are made, the state will receive more than $9 million.
