PANAMÁ. Geisha became once more the best paid coffee variety in the electronic auction “Best of Panama 2009. ”
Hacienda La Esmeralda was able to sell around 350 pounds of Geisha coffee, at $71.50 a pound to the Japanese company Wataru for Ogawa Coffee.
The Carleida plantations sold 500 pounds of Geisha at $26.30 the pound, bought by the Volcafe Specialty Coffee for Shanghai Carmo.
A total of 6,950 pounds of coffee, the most select product of the 16 participating plantations were auctioned online for a revenue of $106,117.
Daniel Peterson, from Hacienda La Esmeralda, said he was satisfied with the auction’s results.
Ricardo Koyner, president of the Specialty Coffee Association of Panama, said that the average price per pound this year was almost double that of 2008, increasing to $15.27 from $8.91.
