PANAMA. The arrival of passengers to Panama decreased by 18 percent in May in comparison with the same period last year, revealed a report of the Republic‘s General Comptroller.
Only 110,487 came to Panama this year compared with 134,784 passengers during the same period last year, when the isthmus was becoming.
According to preliminary figures, there were 87,682 overseas visitors altogether of which 79,754 were tourists, 3,722 were explorers, 4,152 were cruise ship passengers and 22,805 were residents.
In the same period in 2008, 106,579 overseas visitors came to the country, of which 94,181 were tourists, 8,573 were explorers and 3,825 cruise ship passengers.
Some analysts believe that the global economic crisis, together with the rising cost of living in Panama, swine flu and recent reports of insecurity have contributed to the decrease in the number of visitors to the country.
The majority of the passengers that arrived at Tocumen International Airport came from South America, Central America, North America and Europe.
It is expected that the number of visitors to Panama will continue decreasing as the global financial crisis and peoples‘s fears of losing their jobs continue to further affect their travel plans.
