Currently, people who want to visit the interior have to travel by boats and through poorly maintained roads that add extra time to a journey that could take in some circumstances less than an hour by plane.

It is expected that once the Master Plan comes to end in 2020, there will be a hub in the center of the country that will allow visitors the option to catch flights to different parts of the interior.

The airport will have the capacity for big airplanes but because of the high cost, the financing of the project will depend on the private sector and the Government will only be a promoting agent, said the spokesman of the Civil Air Authority, Gregorio Montecer.

The airport, which will have a runway of 5,500 meters and will become a tourist hub, similar to Tocumen airport and will compliment its operations.

It is possible that a site within Cocle, Azuero or Veraguas will be selected as the connection point of international flights.

“The airlines are the ones that give an airport the “hub” category and the Panamanian flight company COPA is currently studying the project to determine its feasibility,” said Montecer.

The airport network will encourage the growth of tourism in Panama.
