The dean of the University of Panama, Gustavo García de Paredes said that the number of security guards will increase to make sure the students, professors and other personnel as well as property are properly protected against criminals.

The security guards will have to go through a very strict hiring procedure that will include physical tests and anti-doping tests, additionally they must have a clean police record and a high school diploma.

Garcia de Paredes said that the security guards will carry guns, but the Academic Council is discussing the possibility of given them zap guns to submit delinquents.

He added that the security guards will wear distinguishable uniforms.

From next month they will receive judo and karate courses to be able to defend themselves and other against criminals.

The dean said that in addition to the security guards, new surveillance cameras have been installed in different department and over the next few days more cameras will be installed in the central campus, to curb the constant muggings in the different faculties.
