PANAMA. Internal political campaigns have left their footprint, so much so that even three months after the primaries of the Democratic Revolutionary Party (PRD), Balbina Herrera met with those who were once her rivals.

This comes at a time when local media outlets quote polls that show that if the presidential elections were held today, Ricardo Martinelli of Cambio Democratico (CD) would be the winner.

On Monday, Herrera had lunch with former president Ernesto Perez Balladares, who did not support her during the primaries. “We want to avoid misunderstandings,” said Perez Balladares, explaining that the meeting was held to signal a message of unity within the party.

“What’s in the past is in the past, it is time to unite our forces to ensure the triumph of this ticket, and the triumph of the party,” he said.

“El Toro” (the bull) claims to be at Herrera’s and Navarro’s disposition.

As for the polls that place Herrera in second place, Perez Balladares undermined them, claiming that there is a different poll every day. “The only poll that is worth it is the one held on May 3,” he argued.

Meanwhile the official candidate lamented declarations from Jose Raul Mulino, president of Union Patriotica, who called the candidate a “communist”, assuring that it was an emotional reaction from someone who aspired to become vice-president.

Herrera reminded Mulino that his father was linked to important members of the PRD in the past.

As for the polls, Herrera argued that the tricolor machinery has just turned on and that the great mobilization of supporters will be seen on May 3. “You will see that in politics there is no small enemy,” she said.
