PANAMA. The negotiations between the management of Industrias Lacteas, the manufacturers of the Estrella Azul products and its employees have collapsed and a strong possibility exists that a strike will start today.

The Industrias Lacteas union leader, Miguel Edward said that the workers are requesting a pay increase of $60 per month, but the company is only offering an extra three cents per hour.

Everyday in Panama around 465,000 liters of milk are produced, of which 35 to 40 percent are acquired by Industrias Lacteas.

The strike will certainly be by for the consumer, who will have to face a shortage of milk in the local supermarkets as well as a drastic increase in the price of the product. Both parties have been negotiating a payment agreement with the intervention of the Labor Ministry, but so far nothing has been accomplished.

Until the closure of this edition management and workers were negotiating trying to find common ground, but neither party was hopeful about reaching a compromise.
