Former president Guillermo Endara Galimany died suddenly at home in Punto Paitilla of a heart attack on Monday evening. He was 73. Endara is best remembered as the president who helped Panama pick up the pieces after the American Invasion in 1989, and as a genuine, honest and good-natured man. His nickname in Spanish - pan de dulce - is a reflection of his accessiblity and the warmth with which he was viewed by his country. Endara is credited with restoring democracy and setting Panama on the road to recovery after the Noriega years. He leaves a widow, Ana Mae Díaz and a daughter, Marcela. He will be greatly missed, not only by his true family but by all those who took him to their hearts.
