Stories from the United States' relationship with the Panama Canal, in celebration of its centenary

Rear Admiral Richard Evelyn Byrd was a famous American explorer, known for being one of the first men to fly to the South Pole and the North Pole. Byrd received the Medal of Honor, the highest decoration that gives the U.S. military. Among the many trips that the Admiral did, one of the most important was his first trip to the Arctic in 1928. This trip left the east coast of the United States, and to scale in New Zealand, before arriving in the Antarctic . For this tour, Byrd use the Panama Canal. Many years later, a military vessel with his name would make a tour of the Panama Canal.
