PANAMA. Panama’s Penn Alumni Club will welcome next week one of the oldest continually running men collegiate choruses in the United States: the University of Pennsylvania Glee Club, founded in 1862.

The Glee Club is a men’s singing club that has traveled to over 35 countries and territories on five continents.

The origins of, glee clubs were choirs specializing in singing a specific form of English seventeenth and eighteenth century part songs, but today most American glee clubs , including the visitors are choruses in the standard sense and no longer perform glees.

The Penn Glee Club is known for its eclectic mix of Penn standards, Broadway classics, classical favorites and pop hits.

The club began in 1862 when eight undergraduate men formed what is now the oldest performing arts group at the University of Pennsylvania.

The Glee Club’s first performance was in the chapel of Collegiate Hall at Ninth and Chestnut Streets in Philadelphia. At this concert, each man wore red and blue ribbons in his buttonhole, thus becoming the first known Penn group to wear the University colors as part of its uniform.

The Glee Club quickly became a part of campus life, singing at football rallies, basketball games, alumni events, and chapel services. Today, the Club is a staple on campus, invited to sing in Alumni reunions and commencement ceremonies.

The Club has been showcased on television specials, in the Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade, and at professional sporting events.

The Philadelphia Phillies had the Club sing the National Anthem at the 1993 National League Championship Series.

The Club has also shared the stage with such superstars as Bob Hope, Frank Sinatra, Jimmy Stewart, Grace Kelly, and Bill Cosby.

And now they are visiting our country to delight us with their singing.

The Glee Club’s last performance in Panama was in 1969. The choir will also visit Costa Rica and Colombia.

The concert will be at the Teatro Ascanio Arosemena on Monday May 25 at 7:30 p.m.

Tickets are $20 and are being sold at El Hombre de la Mancha (Multiplaza and Albrook Mall), AMCHAM offices (Torre Banesco, Marbella, 17th floor) and at the door.

Proceeds to benefit the Danilo Perez Foundation. Info.: info@pennalumnipanama.com.
