Lenis Bustamente, who is the Projects and Plan Coordinator of the Judicial Organ said that the whole idea is to resolve conflict in a peaceful and efficient manner.
Bustamente said Panama is one of the few countries in the continent that still has the “corregidores system in place and that it is necessary to modernize it.
The judges of peace will pass judgement in civil and family cases, and although they could impose protection injunctions and fines, they will not be able to send anybody to jail.
The coordinator believes that the new system will adapt better to demands of the 21st century.
