PANAMA. While the overall Consumer Price Index fell in the last month of 2008, food prices continued to climb according to the recently released figures.

The Price Index in urban areas and in the districts of Panama and San Miguelito in December 2008 showed a decline of 0.4 and 0.5 percent respectively compared to November according to the Comptroller’s Office.

However, the 2008 index for the year showed a rise of 8.7 percent, above the increase felt in 2007 relative to 2006.

The monthly variation of the different categories that make up the urban Consumer Prices Index registered in December 2008 the following declines:

Housing, water, electricity and gas fell 6 percent, due to a fall in the price of electricity; transportation fell 2.3 percent, recreation, entertainment and cultural services fell 0.4 percent; while learning fell 0.2 percent due to a decrease in personal computer prices.

The categories that showed increases include food and beverages (1.4 percent), due to the increased pricing of vegetables.

Furniture, and home maintenance showed a rise of 0.7 percent; while clothing and footwear increased by 0.6 percent.
