PANAMA. More than 5000 units from the National Police, the Traffic and Terrestrial Transport Authority ATTT (Autoridad de Tránsito y Transporte Terrestre) and the Civil Protection Service are going to take part in the operation Mesias, which aims to guarantee the security of all citizens during Holy Week.

During this period thousands of people abandon the city to go to the interior and take part in religious festivals and celebrations all over the the country.

The Chief of Operations of the ATTT, Juan Herrera said that they are going to have between 700 and 800 units patrolling the Panamerican Highway to prevent accidents.

He added that people who are found driving while intoxicated will have their vehicles confiscated and will not get them back until the following week.

The Civil Protection Service director, Luis Francisco Sucre said that they are going to have lifeguards on beaches and rivers for the next few days and advises the public that in case of emergency they can call 911.

The National Police director, Francisco Troya recommended the public to be vigilant and to tell neighbors that they are leaving their properties unattended to avoid becoming burglary victims.
