PANAMA. A cell phone scam first exposed in the Panama Star has resurfaced.

A gang of fraudsters are calling unsuspecting cell phone users saying they have won big prizes.

The scam is simple. First you receive a missed call, when you call back a man who introduces himself as Mr Manuel Lopez from the cell phone provider Movistar enthusiastically claims you have won the second prize in a promotion which entitles you to $5000 in cash, $600 in supermarket products, a blackberry and a Toyota RAV4.

During the conversation “Mr Lopez” keeps asking how do you feel as well as asking personal questions such as where you work and where you are in the country.

When he believes that the person is convinced he asks you to buy three prepaid $15 Movistar cards, then to call back and give him the pin numbers and burn them.

The scammers sell those numbers to other people at half the price. They are doing the same with text messages. If you receive a similar call just hang up.
