PANAMA. The appointment of the new director of the Social Security Office (CSS), Guillermo Saez-Llorens was finally ratified yesterday by the National Assembly, but only after long discussion by the Credential’s Commission.

Questions had arisen over Saez-Llorens’ candidacy after three complaints were made to the Attorney General’s office over the alleged conflict of interests between his recent job as General Manager of GBM de Panama, SA, a company that is contracted to provide services to the CSS, and his bid to be the CSS’ new director.

Internal CSS regulations stipulate that the Director General must not own or be a signatory of any company that provides goods or services to the CSS.

Saez-Llorens told the Commission that he resigned July 31 and was never a shareholder or director of the company.

He said he would not take up the new job until October 1 so the two roles would not overlap.
