Stories from the United States' relationship with the Panama Canal, in celebration of its centenary

The Mariner was a tug operating in the vicinity of the Panama Canal since 1906. Upon completion of construction continue the tug operating in the Panama Canal until 1918. At that time the U.S. was fully committed in World War I World, and the United States needed ships capable of defending the Canal of German submarines. Given that many of the larger ships were defending other military bases, the tug Mariner became the USS Mariner, a small armed vessel, capable of towing continue its work, but in an emergency situation, defend the Canal.
