PANAMA. We all have special reasons to celebrate Mother’s Day? whether one’s mother is still a vital cornerstone of family unity or a faded vision of years past, but not forgotten.

In Panama, of course, Día de la Madre is special holiday closely associated with the Feast of the Immaculate Conception – a day when all mothers are honored with the same esteem as the Mother of Jesus, highlighted by private family acknowledgments followed by jubilant fiestas and dances.

Whenever I think of Mother’s Day, it brings to mind a famous metaphor for parenting, that of giving a child the 'roots to grow and the wings to fly.'

Isn’t that the quintessential purpose for celebrating Mother’s Day, giving thanks to the woman who always seemed to be there, the one that continuously showed us the way, whether we realized it or not?

In some families, mothers are strong vocal matriarchs, in others they are more silent, steady influences. They all seem to have that one amazing, virtue, their gift of unconditional love.

We’ve all experienced it Regardless of how we turned out. Mothers have that exceptional gift to make us feel special, to platform our achievements and disregard our lesser accomplishments.

Roots to grow. Wings to fly. I have often thought about those those two simply but very complex statements, those gifts that make mothers so extraordinary. I believe we have all learned as we grow older that the best gifts, the most precious gifts are the ones that come from the heart? that come from our mothers.

Mother’s gifts? as children, we perceive them in a very different way than we do as adults. Their gift in helping us grow, to take us by the hand and show us the way; then, when the time is right, to release us into the world and let us fly in our own direction to our own destines is one of the most beautiful and loving acts in life. However, it is also undoubtedly one of the most difficult decisions for a mother to make? to give birth, to nurture, to teach and then to open one’s hands and let us soar freely away.

However we celebrate Mother’s Day on December 8th, we all have our own special reasons to simply thank mothers for being mothers? to thank them for the core values they instilled in us as children and continue to reinforce as adults – no matter what our age.

For me, it will be remembering the person she was and the special moments we shared together.
