HERRERA. The mayor of Las Minas, Eduardo Franco, said that he will investigate whether people suffering from extreme poverty are using funds from the Programa Red de Oportunidades (Net of Opportunities) in “cantinas” and gambling, after a report saying so reached his office.

Questioned about the situation, he said he was not aware of it, however did not deny that it could be happening in some of the areas where the clandestine sale of liquor and gambling abounds.

Franco said that he will meet with the district representatives, and National Police officers in order to determine if the situation exists.

“I am surprised by this story and I am going to hold this investigation, because if there are people that have taken it upon themselves to use the money to carry on these games they should be punished by the law,” he said.

Franco stated that he is working with two area representatives to stop the illicit sale of alcohol, especially, aguardiente, a local drink.
