PANAMA. The number of tourists coming to Panama has decreased was one of the findings of the Tourism Executive Encounter, sponsored by the Chamber of Commerce.

The reasons for the slowdown are the global financial crisis and the A1/H1N1 pandemic that affected travel around the globe.

However, the hotel sector is optimistic and feel that 2010 is going to be a good year for tourism in general.

It is expected that in the next three years 25 new hotels are going to be built across the country, to satisfy the demand of visitors choosing Panama as a destination.

< In 2008 the Panama Tourism Authority registered 77 new accommodation projects in the capital city alone, while in the rest of the country 22 more are under review.

The bad news is that some have been suspended because the subsidies ran out in 2008 and no further capital is available.
