PANAMA. I read with some amusement that our new mayor is now considering holding the carnival at the newly created 'Cinta Costera'.

The fact is that no one wants the carnival in their neighborhood. The disruption to the city which is caused by this yearly event I am sure could be negated by holding it in an area which is not one of the main arteries of the city. History has taught us that Calle 50, Via España, and recently Transistmica has caused so much annoyance not only to the businesses in the area where they have to close for security reasons.

Alternatively residents who are forced to relocate or suffer considerably due to traffic snarl ups or general noise caused by bands and party revellers who have had too much to drink.

Therefore, is there an area which remains within the city boundaries which would be suitable for such an event? Yes, I believe only one area which has little or no residences and few businesses which would be affected.

The businesses in the surrounding area may even profit from the event with the increase of tourists who are attracted to this spectacle. I am proposing the 'Causeway'. It is out of the main city and the buses can easily ship the revellers into the specified area where it is being held.

Of course there is one other question which has not been asked. Do residents really want the carnival anymore in the city? A survey with this question alone may make interesting reading for our new mayor (Imagine the money which could be saved.) I am sure the majority of your readers would say 'No'.

As any affluent members leave the city during the week of the carnival to their secondary homes or just to take a vacation at the glorious beaches which are abundant in this beautiful country. Alternatively, the lower paid workers are forced to find alternate methods of getting to work or are forced to take unwanted vacation entitlements to escape the chaos.

I think the government needs to reevaluate who this carnival is really for and what meaningful benefits it brings to the city.
