PANAMA. The Canal contributions to the state will be cut by $17 million in the next fiscal period.

PANAMA. The Canal contributions to the state will be cut by $17 million in the next fiscal period.

Panama Canal Authority director Alberto Aleman Zubieta presented the proposed budget to the budget commission at the National Assembly.

The ACP contributed $771 million in 2009, but for the next period October 2009-December 2010 the ACP will give $754 million.

This adjustment is justified by the expansion expenses and reduced cargo transit.

The ACP does not expect an increase in the amount of cargo passing through the Canal.

Projected tonnage passing through the canal this year was expected to be $303.7 million but the global crisis has leveled the projection to $297 million.

Also personnel will increase by over 1,500 from 9,227 to 10,740 employees.

Operations costs for the next period are estimated at $638 million a drop of $8.2 million from this year.
