Swine flu steady rise continues

PANAMA. The Health Ministry of Panama (MINSA) has updated the number of swine flu cases to 527.

This new report reflects 17 more cases than the previous July 13 count.

Of the total, 322 (61 percent) are patients under 15, and 118 (22.5 percent) are patients between the ages of 20 to 49.

84 percent of patients have already received ten an epidemiological discharge. Most of the cases are in the metropolitan area. No deaths have been reported so far and no patient is hospitalized.

In six health regions, including the indigenous areas, there is no evidence of swine flu and more samples are been taken to rule out the AH1N1 influenza.

Recently, Belice, Haiti and Saint Kitts and Nevis reported their first cases.

MINSA reiterates the importance of frequent hand washing with soap and water and to cover the face when sneezing or coughing.

People already sick with the flu must stay home and follow doctor’s orders.

Symptoms of the AH1N1 are cough, fever, weakness, vomiting, diarrhea, throat pain and nasal secretions.
