VERAGUAS. The trash recollection company Santiago Waste Management (SWM) stopped collecting garbage temporarily on Monday, unleashing a sanitary crisis with the accumulation of trash with bad odors emanating from residential and commercial areas. The company has stopped its services because it has lost more than $220,000 thanks to people who refuse to pay for the garbage collection service, one which SWM has been providing since 2007.

Celmira Quintero, SWM deputy financial manager, said that the company will not collect trash until the municipal authorities analyze a proposal presented by the heads of the company to look for alternatives to the financial crisis that SWM is undergoing.

According to Quintero, SWM can no longer subsidize the service in the province.
