Even though the government of Veraguas conducted a clean up operation with trucks from the State's own institutions, targetting businesses and the communities of Santiago, the garbage is still much in evidence and the smell is increasingly intolerable.

Edward Moley Ibarra, councilman of the Santiago district said that they along with the support from institutions such as MOP, (Ministry of Public Works) are trying to collect as much garbage as possible from critical areas of the city, until an agreement has been made with the directors of the company respnsible for collecting garbage.

According to the civil servant, a proposal has been made to the company and they are expecting a response.

The proposal assures the company that they will receive $10,000 dollars in monthly subsidies to get them through the financial crisis and to bring the withdrawal of clean up services to an end.

A group of residents from the El Espino community, in via San Franciso who live near the garbage dump, said that because the garbage is not properly disposed of, all kinds of animals and insects are draw to their houses and that they can no longer stand the proliferation of flies, the large flocks of buzzards and awful smells.
