PANAMA. Police officers have been sent in to replace prison wardens in the La Joyita jail following the mass breakout of 12 prisoners a few weeks ago. The authorities suspect that prison wardens may have been involved in the escape from the high-security institution where drug-gangs are known to operate. The Minister of Government and Justice recently announced that three perimeter fences will be built around the La Joya and La Joyita jails in an effort to keep prisoners in.
PANAMA. Vice-president Juan Carlos Varela was due to meet with Panama City mayor, Bosco Vallarino, to evaluate his leadership of the town hall and to help him find ways to improve it. Varela defended the mayor who has recently been facing corruption allegations about mis-use of public funds and said: “It was an unnecessary mistake, but it has been rectified. Bosco will be a good mayor, I am sure of that.” Varela said that garbage collection is more important than a check that was never cashed.
PANAMA. Vice-president Juan Carlos Varela said he will not travel to Chile until the families of Panamanian victims of the SAN-100 helicopter accident have received compensation. He was reported to be travelling to Chile earlier this week to pay that government compensation for the death of their general in the 2007 accident.
