PANAMA. Following a Panama Star article on a dinner hosted by Ancon (Asociacion Nacional para la Conservacion de la Naturaleza) to which presidential candidates were invited to speak, Juan Carlos Navarro, PRD’s VP nominee who spoke at the event, responds:

“ Congratulations on your interest and today’s article in the Panama Star on the environment.

Unfortunately, its inaccurate to portray that the Balbina-Herrera ticket ignores the environment. Its also inaccurate to affirm that “neither (Varela nor Navarro) spoke about environmental policies”.

The truth of Herrera – Navarro is that we strongly support the environment and presented numerous specific environmental programs at the Ancon dinner, including:

1. More support for ANAM

2. More support for national parks and protecting biodiversity

3. A specific effort to protect and recuperate key watersheds

4. A national effort to combat climate change

5. A national nine-pronged action strategy for the environment;

And many other specific proposals, as you can ascertain from the video of my participation in said event (a copy of which is available from Ancon).

Please let me know if you need any more information on our stand on the environment, which is detailed in our government program “Un Gobierno para la Gente” which was formally made public on Thursday and sent to your prestigious newspaper, Herrera – Navarro being the only presidential ticket which has publicly presented its government program and its position on the environment.

Thank you again for your interest in the environment, for making public this brief letter of clarification and do let us know in the future if there is any further information you may need on this matter.

Sincerely,

Juan Carlos Navarro”
