PANAMA. The 2009 Carnival was a bloody one and 33 people lost their lives through accidents and as victims of criminal events. The majority of the fatalities occurred in the capital city.

The National Civil Protection System Sinaproc (Sistema Nacional de Protección Civil) said that during the five days of festivities they handled 190 cases including superficial injuries, gun fire wounds, intoxication and traffic accidents.

According to Sinaproc, during the festivities over 37,000 people went to beaches and rivers, which means that 25,000 more swimmers went to the interior than in 2008. Tw enty-one were saved from drowning.

Meanwhile the National Police said that 14 firearms were seized during the five days of carnival and 32 people who were wanted by the authorities were detained.

Eight cars stolen during the celebrations were returned to their owners.

The Ministry of Health also detected and retained 45 forged carnets that allow people to sell food during the carnival.

The 32 health inspectors imposed fines of $50 and made official complaints before the Judicial Investigation Department.
