PANAMA. The Martinelli effect has come now to touch the Maritime Authority (AMP).

PANAMA. The Martinelli effect has come now to touch the Maritime Authority (AMP).

Newly appointed director Roberto Linares is putting the financial state of the authority under the microscope. “ The situation is difficult but we can overcome it. We need to use imagination to pull the AMP out of the hole”, said Linares at the Vacamonte port during the festivities honoring the Virgen del Carmen, patron of sailors.

He said privatizations are a possibility because some ports are deteriorated and more personnel is needed to curb piracy, although he didn't mention which ports could be privatized.

Already irregularities have been found in some concessions: millions of dollars in unpaid debts to the institution, ongoing projects without environmental impact studies from the National Environment Authority (ANAM) and unauthorized landfills.

“There is no witch hunt at the Maritime Authority but the time of godfathers has ended in this country ” the director said.

The Maritime authority is calling all companies dealing with it to come straighten their situation.
