PANAMA. The First Judicial Circuit Family judge, Cristian Chavez Martinez has ordered communication medial not to publish or broadcast images or give the names of minors in news or documentaries.
The order came after the names of two minors involved in a domestic violence incident were mentioned during a broadcast.
The judge said that those who do not comply with the order will be punished according to the law.
The request was put forward by the children’s lawyer, Alfonso Nuñez, who said that the interests of the minors should be protected while the necessary enquiries are carried out.
Nuñez also requested that the mass media stopped publishing news about the children.
The judge said that the Panamanian State has adopted the Children Rights Convention and therefore took the compromise of protect the private lives of boys and girls.
Names and pictures of children cannot be used in the media under Panamanian law, but occasionally newspapers, television and radio station forget the rule and publish them.
