PANAMA. Ex-president Martin Torrijos may have to face questions by the anti-corruption authorties about his alleged abuse of the presidential plane for social purposes.
The allegations were made by current President Ricardo Martinelli who was defending his proposed purchase of a new presidential plane.
“If I use the plane it will be for official purposes and not like Torrijos who used it to go off partying and on binges at the expense of everyone else,” he said.
The Attorney General, Ana Mathilde Gomez, said that she will request a transcript of the President’s comments so that they can be investigated by the anti-corruption unit.
She said that if the allegations warrant prosecution, the case will have to be passed straight to the Supreme Court because Torrijos is currently a legislator in the Central American Parliament (Parlacen) and is therefore immune from prosecution.
Martinelli said the current plane is falling apart and costs thousands of dollars annually in maintainance. “I´m not buying it just to use it.. I use my own plane, I pay the gasoline, I pay the captain. I don’t need these toys,” he said.
