PANAMA. The electricity company, Union Fenosa, loses around $10 million a year to electrical fraud, the distribution manager, Sebastian Perez, said.
He said that each month the company finds that about 500 metres have been tampered with.
The people who steal electricity come from all social classes. Meter readers have discovered “fixed” meters in restaurants, discotheques, media stations and houses of all types.
In addition, Perez said that around $1.6 million of cable goes missing each year.
Union Fenosa has a total of 350,000 lamp posts, 120,000 street lights, 40,000 transformers and 450,000 residential and commercial customers. In all Union Fenosa’s cables extend for 20,600 kilometres across the country.
The company is awaiting the approval of the Public Services Authority to give the go-ahead to their proposed project to install underground cables in the banking area of Panama city. The project will cost around $20 million and will connect the El Carmen church with Calle 50, via Brasil and via España.
