PANAMA. A new bill is being discussed at the National Assembly to allow pensioners who board cruise ships on Panamanian ports to have a discount of up to 30 percent on their tickets.
The proponent of the bill, the legislator from Colon, Abelardo Antonio said that although the current law gives discounts on boats and ships for pensioners, this statute is not applicable to tourist vessels.
Antonio said that although the Consumer Protection Authority is supposed to enforce the law, it alleges that cruise ships are not public transport and therefore it is unable to apply it.
The bill proposes to modify the law adding cruise ships into the categories of boats.
“What we want is justice for the pensioners, who have worked all their lives and through a lot of sacrifice save money to take a trip in these cruise ships,” said Antonio.
Before the law is modified, the National Assembly will have to discuss and vote on the matter in three separate debates. If approved, the amendment can be made.
