It could reduce 90 percent of the four hours ride users have to endure daily on diablo rojos to only 15 minutes each way and cruise 30 meters above ground.
It would cover a three kilometer stretch and the route would go from Samaria to Samaria Piedra, passing through Don Bosco and Rio Palomo.
The legislator got the idea from a similar cable car system in Medellin, Colombia.
The cost is estimated between $35 and $50 million and could be built within two years.
Pineda says the financing could come from the credit line Brazil gave Panama for the metro project.
The Colombian cable car generates $2.5 million a year advertising revenue.
The system would have 93 cabins with the capacity to transport 3,000 people each hour traveling at 18 kilometers an hour.
It could produce employment for 300 people. The downside is that at least 300 homes would have to be expropriated.
The legislator proposes to offer each family a home at another location in exchange for their property.
Pineda hope to meet with President Martinelli to present the project. A cable car or cable railway consists of one or two fixed cables (called "track cables"), one loop of cable (called a "haulage rope"), and two passenger cabins. The fixed cables provide support for the cabins. They are very popular in the Alpine region.
