PANAMA. The sale of handicrats increased during July, although there has been a reduction in the number of international tourists arriving in the country, says the National Handicraft Department of the Commerce and Industry Ministry (DGAN).

The government owned handicraft shop at the Tocumen International Airport has generated $47,547 in the first seven months of 2009.

The sale of handicrafts in other parts of the country has generated $12,217.

During the first three months of the year the government ownedhandicraft shop saw a reduction of profits as the principal buyers from Europe, Asia and North America stopped coming to Panama as the result of the economic global crisis.

Several indigenous groups in Panama supplement their income by selling handicrafts.
