PANAMA. The biggest saltwater competition in Central America is back in Panama again. Tropic Star Lodge Fishing tournament will be held from November 27 – December 1 at Bahia Piñas, Darien.

Registration fee is $750 per boat (3 anglers per team) and according to its website deadlines are coming soon: for gasoline yachts the deadline is November 14, for diesel yachts it is November 24.

Every year, the organizers give out more than $75,000 in prizes, including a Nissan Pathfinder for the fisherman who is able to catch and release one marlin in good conditions each of the three days of the competition.

According to the organizers 36 international participants have registered already.

Numbers for national participants are not available as the registration period is still open, but around 100 participants are expected.

By doing the math, with the amount of participants, the number of fish captured will be countless. But the tournament prides itself in its efforts to preserve fish like the marlin, sword and sail fish.

All of the captured fish, not only the ones that qualify for the prize car, are captured and then released back to the sea.

Participants will get to Bahia Piña on the 27, and the competition days will run from the 28 to the 30, with fishing hours running from 7:00 a.m. – 3:00 p.m.

Contact the Tropic Express office in Panama City at 232-0084 if interested. Payments are accepted by card or checks.

Tropic Star Lodge is a world renowned fishing area, where the International Game Fishing Association has recorded several world records.

Who knows, maybe the next one will be yours.
