President Martinelli has raised some eyebrows for his outspoken comments about left-wing Latin-American governments made during an interview with the Italian newspaper Il Giornale which is owned by Italian Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi. He described the governments as “populist demagogues” and said that “they make big speeches to the masses and fill their heads with false ideas but do nothing, neither creating jobs of making reforms, just attacking private property so that they can get a consensus.”
CHIRIQUI. The Popular Front for Indigenous and Rural People of Panama departs today from the comarca Ngobe Bugle on their 570 km march to the nation’s capital. The Front is marching to Panama city to protest oppression by transnational mining, hydroelectric and tourism companies and to request the President to respect their collective land rights. The march will arrive in Panama city in two weeks.
PANAMA. The Civil Aviation Authority (ACC) is recommending a Hawker 400 as the new presidential plane at a cost of around $20 million. ACC chief, Rafael Barcenas, said that in making the recommendation he took into consideration how far the plane would have to fly and operational and maintenance costs. “The cheapest is not always the best,” he said.
