MONTEVIDEO. Lawmakers in Uruguay have approved a bill allowing gay and lesbian couples to adopt. Despite opposition from Uruguay's Roman Catholic Church and some of the political opposition, the 99-seat Chamber or Representatives on Thursday passed the bill 40-13, with the remaining members absent. If it becomes law, Uruguay would be the first country in Latin American to allow adoption by gay and lesbian couples.
TORONTO. The Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) is investigating the circumstances surrounding an attack on the Jamaican Consulate in Toronto, early Wednesday morning, which left minor damage. Fresh fighting has erupted between Myanmar forces and an armed ethnic group in the remote northeast, forcing tens of thousands to flee across the border into China, activists and state media said on Friday.
